What is a Firewall?

A firewall is a security device or software designed to monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predetermined security rules. Actively monitoring traffic between trusted networks (such as a private network) and untrusted networks (like the internet), firewalls help protect computers, servers, and networks from unauthorized access, cyberattacks, and data breaches.

Types of Firewalls

  • Packet-Filtering Firewalls

    These firewalls inspect packets at the network protocol header level. They evaluate incoming and outgoing packets against a set of security rules and allow or deny them based on the criteria defined.

  • Stateful Inspection Firewalls

    Also known as dynamic packet filtering, these firewalls keep track of the state of active connections and make decisions based on the context of the packets, rather than just the individual packets themselves.

  • Proxy Firewalls

    This type acts as an intermediary between internal networks and the external internet. Proxy firewalls prevent direct connections between both parties and can offer additional features such as caching and content filtering.

  • Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW)

    NGFWs have the capabilities of traditional firewalls while adding features like deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention systems (IPS), and application awareness, enhancing security functionalities.

How Firewalls Work

Firewalls use predefined rules to filter traffic and create a barrier between trusted and untrusted networks. When a packet arrives, the firewall examines it according to security rules that dictate whether it should be allowed or blocked. This process can happen at different levels, such as the network layer or application layer, depending on the firewall type.

Common techniques used by firewalls include:

  • Access Control Lists (ACLs)
  • Network Address Translation (NAT)
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) support
